Hiram Maxim's Steam-Powered Flying Machine depicts the enormous steam-driven aeroplane built by British-American inventor Sir Hiram Stevens Maxim, tested on its purpose-built rail track at Baldwyn's Park in Bexleyheath, Kent, England, where it briefly lifted off the ground on July 31, 1894 before crashing. With a 104-foot wingspan and twin 180-horsepower steam engines, it was the largest craft to leave the ground in the 19th century, a landmark experiment in the early history of powered flight.
