Highland Dogs on the Moor, by Edwin Landseer Four dogs gather on a rocky Highland hillside beneath a pale, clouded sky: a lean Scottish deerhound stands watchful at the center, flanked by a spotted hound and a russet hound seated together, a black-and-white collie-type resting low against the stone, and a small white terrier puppy looking on. Landseer, the preeminent British animal painter of the Victorian era, was celebrated for compositions that gave dogs individual character and presence, a quality on full display in this quiet, contemplative grouping.
