Hanging Up the Wash, c. 1914, by Harry Whittier Frees is a black-and-white photograph of a costumed kitten standing beside a miniature clothesline hung with tiny checked dresses, striped rompers, and knitted booties, a wicker laundry basket at its feet. Frees, an American photographer celebrated for his whimsical anthropomorphic animal photography, staged and costumed live kittens and puppies in human poses and everyday scenes for the postcard and greeting-card trade of the early 20th century.
