Glaisher and Coxwell’s Scientific Balloon Ascent, by Butterworth & Heath depicts English meteorologist James Glaisher and aeronaut Henry Coxwell in the basket of their gas balloon, surrounded by scientific instruments and coiled rigging during their record-setting high-altitude ascent of 1862. The scene was rendered in wood engraving by Butterworth & Heath, a Victorian engraving firm active in the British periodical press of the 1860s-80s.
