Gardener’s House at Antibes (La Maison du Jardinier, Antibes), c. 1888 by Claude Monet

Gardener’s House at Antibes, painted by Claude Monet in 1888, depicts a modest tiled-roof cottage set among olive and pine trees, with the old town of Antibes and the distant Alps dissolving into a haze of blue beyond the Mediterranean coastline. Monet rendered the scene during a four-month stay on the French Riviera, applying thick, vivid brushwork to capture the intense midday light and saturated color of the southern coast. The painting belongs to a series of nearly forty Antibes canvases that expanded the range of color and light in his mature Impressionist practice.
