Galloping Horse Motion Study, by Eadweard Muybridge depicts a horse and jockey captured mid-gallop across a grid of sequential frames, each isolating a single phase of the stride to reveal the mechanics of movement invisible to the naked eye. Eadweard Muybridge, an English-American photographer (1830-1904) and pioneer of motion-study photography, arranged multiple cameras along a track to break locomotion into discrete images long before the invention of motion pictures.

Artist: Eadweard Muybridge (English-American, 1830-1904). Date: 1887.
