Death and the Apothecary, c. 1814, by Thomas Rowlandson (also known as The Quack Doctor) is a hand-colored satirical etching depicting a crowded apothecary shop where a skeletal figure of Death quietly mixes "slow poison" behind the counter while the apothecary attends waiting patients. Rowlandson, one of the leading English caricaturists of the Georgian era, used the scene to lampoon the dubious medical remedies sold in shops of the period.
