City of Louisville, c. 1872 by Asa Coolidge Warren
City of Louisville, by Asa Coolidge Warren, depicts a nineteenth-century railroad trestle bridge spanning the Ohio River, with a paddle-wheel steamboat passing beneath as the city's skyline rises along the far bank; Warren was an American illustrator (1819-1904) who contributed numerous townscape views to Picturesque America, the D. Appleton & Co. survey edited by William Cullen Bryant, and this plate, engraved by E. P. Brandard, captures the growing industrial ambition of the young river city at the height of the steamboat era.
