Castle Geyser, Yellowstone National Park, by William Henry Jackson captures the geyser mid-eruption beside its namesake cone-shaped sinter formation and a turquoise hot spring pool, framed by lodgepole pine forest in Yellowstone's Upper Geyser Basin. Jackson, the pioneering American photographer whose images helped persuade Congress to establish Yellowstone as the first U.S. national park in 1872, remains one of the most influential documentarians of the American West.
Photographer: William Henry Jackson (1843-1942). Date: c. 1898.
