Canyon de Chelly, by Edward S. Curtis captures a line of Navajo riders on horseback, trailed by a dog, crossing the sunlit canyon floor beneath towering sandstone walls in northeastern Arizona. Edward S. Curtis (1868–1952) was an American photographer renowned for his decades-long documentation of Native American life, and this image — among the most celebrated of the more than 50,000 negatives he produced — sets the vast scale of the canyon's ancient walls against the small figures of its Navajo inhabitants.
