Le Canvas Atelier
Boatyard near Honfleur (Le Chantier de Petits Navires, près de Honfleur), c. 1864 by Claude Monet – Grey Green Edition
Boatyard near Honfleur (Le Chantier de Petits Navires, près de Honfleur), painted by Claude Monet in 1864 depicts a modest shipbuilding beach on the Normandy coast near Honfleur, its weathered timber sheds, hewn logs, and pebble shingle giving way to a choppy Channel dotted with small fishing sailboats. Monet painted the scene during the formative summer he spent at Honfleur and Sainte-Adresse in the company of Eugène Boudin and Johan Jongkind, the two marine painters who first encouraged him to work directly from nature. The warm palette of rust-orange, golden brown, and blue-and-gold sky belongs to Monet’s earliest mature period, well before the brighter color and broken brushwork of Impressionism proper.
