Black Swan, c. 1848 by John Gould and H.C. Richter depicts a solitary black swan gliding among reed grasses, its plumage built up in fine crosshatched linework beneath a vivid coral-red bill, with two more swans and a pair of waterfowl in flight rendered in the misty distance. The plate, captioned Cygnus Atratus, is drawn from John Gould's landmark The Birds of Australia; this final-volume plate was illustrated by Henry Constantine Richter, who became Gould's principal artist after the death of his wife and original illustrator, Elizabeth Gould, in 1841.
