Belgrade at the Confluence of the Danube and Sava, c. 1844, by William Henry Bartlett looks across the water toward the hilltop Belgrade Fortress and the minarets of the old Ottoman town, with local figures, sailing vessels, and a wayside shrine framing the foreground. Bartlett was a prolific English topographical illustrator whose travel drawings, engraved and published across dozens of 19th-century volumes, brought detailed views of Europe and the Near East to a wide readership.
