Autumn Afternoon on Lake George, New York, by John Frederick Kensett captures the calm waters and softened autumn light of Lake George in New York's Adirondacks, rendered with the restraint and clarity characteristic of the Hudson River School. Kensett, one of the movement's leading painters, was renowned for his luminous, contemplative treatments of the American wilderness. Born in Cheshire, Connecticut in 1816, he became a central figure in 19th-century American landscape painting before his death in 1872.
