A View of Gold Hill, Nevada, 1867, by Timothy O’Sullivan The photograph documents the Comstock Lode mining settlement of Gold Hill, Nevada, its ore-rich hillsides and scattered timber structures captured while O’Sullivan worked as photographer for Clarence King’s Geological Exploration of the Fortieth Parallel. O’Sullivan (1840-1882) was an American photographer renowned for his Civil War photography and, in the years after the war, for documenting the rugged terrain and mining frontier of the American West.
