Young Spanish Woman with a Guitar, painted by Pierre-Auguste Renoir in 1898, portrays a dark-haired young woman in Andalusian dress, a black hat over a bright red-orange headscarf, absorbed in playing her guitar against a loosely brushed green backdrop. The sitter wears an embroidered jacket in gold and floral hues, one of a series of Spanish guitarist studies Renoir produced during the 1890s when Spain-inspired themes appealed to French taste. Renoir devotes his attention less to narrative than to the guitar's warm wooden curves and the rich chord of red, black, and gold in her costume. This reproduction is drawn from a distinct print batch with a slightly softer, more muted tonal balance than the companion edition of this composition elsewhere in our collection.
