Winter in the Country: A Cold Morning, by Currier & Ives depicts a snow-blanketed New England farmstead at daybreak, with a traveler and his dog approaching a lamplit yellow farmhouse past a barnyard of cattle, a loaded ox-cart, and bare, frost-laced trees. Currier & Ives, the prolific 19th-century New York print publisher, issued this scene as a hand-colored lithograph after a painting by George Henry Durrie, whose winter farm scenes made him one of the most popular American painters of the era.
