Water Lily Pond (Le Bassin aux Nymphéas), painted by Claude Monet c. 1899 shows a curved Japanese footbridge arching over a tranquil pond at Giverny, its pale green rail mirrored in still water thick with pink and white water lilies. Weeping willows and reeds crowd the banks, filtering dappled light across the surface in soft strokes of green and gold. This is one of roughly twelve canvases Monet painted of the same motif in 1899, the first sustained study of the water garden he would return to for the rest of his life.
