Washington Crossing the Delaware, by Emanuel Leutze gathers Washington and his men into an ice-choked boat at first light, every figure braced against the current as the crossing is forced. Leutze, the German-American history painter (1816-1868), composed the scene in Düsseldorf as a deliberate piece of Romantic myth-making, less a report of the night of 25 December 1776 than an argument about resolve.
