Virgin Forest with Setting Sun, c. 1910, by Henri Rousseau sets a glowing red sun above a dense wall of stylized palm fronds and broad leaves, with pink and yellow blossoms in the foreground and, low in the undergrowth, a spotted jaguar seizing a dark figure. Rousseau (French, 1844-1910) was a self-taught painter whose invented, dreamlike jungles, never painted from life in the tropics but inspired by sources such as the Jardin des Plantes in Paris, became the defining works of his naive style; this canvas is held at the Kunstmuseum Basel.
Artist: Henri Rousseau (French, 1844-1910). Date: c. 1910.
