Ivory Gull, by John James Audubon Two ivory gulls stand on a rocky Arctic shoreline beside scattered mussel shells, one alert with a butter-yellow bill and the other calling out with its head thrown back against a pale blue sky. Audubon, the American ornithologist, naturalist, and painter (1785-1851) who created The Birds of America, prized the ivory gull for its rarity as a stray visitor south of the Canadian Arctic.
