Blue Crane or Heron, by John James Audubon A slate-blue heron with a maroon head and neck strides across a marshy bank, its plumed crest catching the light as a smaller white heron watches from the reeds beyond. Audubon, the American ornithologist, naturalist, and painter (1785-1851) who created The Birds of America, captured the species he called the Blue Crane in one of the elegant, naturalistic poses that defined his revolutionary approach to ornithological art.
