Common American Gull, by John James Audubon An adult gull in white and soft gray plumage, its tail banded in black, stands beside a mottled brown juvenile on a shell-strewn shoreline beneath a clouded sky. Audubon, the American ornithologist, naturalist, and painter (1785-1851) who created The Birds of America, painted the pair together to show the species across ages during his travels along the Atlantic coast.
