Spotted Grouse, by John James Audubon A male grouse fans his banded tail in display beside two mottled hens and a fourth watchful bird, the group gathered on a mossy log amid berry-laden shrubs and grass. Audubon, the American ornithologist, naturalist, and painter (1785-1851) who created The Birds of America, recorded the species, now known as the Spruce Grouse and prized for its remarkable tameness in the wild.
