The Abandoned House at Tholonet by Paul Cézanne
Choose options
The Abandoned House at Tholonet, painted by Paul Cézanne, depicts a weathered two-story stone farmhouse near the village of Le Tholonet outside Aix-en-Provence, its pale ochre walls and shuttered window set behind a low stone retaining wall, with dark cypress trees and a distant hillside house completing the composition. Cézanne painted numerous studies of abandoned farmhouses and rural buildings in the Aix countryside during the 1880s, drawn to their blocky, geometric massing as a way of exploring solid form, a preoccupation that would come to define his mature style. Le Tholonet, a small village at the foot of Mont Sainte-Victoire, was one of Cézanne's frequent painting grounds in the years after he returned to Provence from Paris.
