The Abandoned House at Tholonet, by Paul Cézanne depicts a weathered two-story stone farmhouse near the village of Le Tholonet outside Aix-en-Provence, its pale ochre walls and shuttered window set behind a low stone retaining wall, with dark cypress trees and a distant hillside house completing the composition. As a French Post-Impressionist painter (1839-1906) and a crucial bridge between Impressionism and Cubism, Cézanne painted numerous studies of abandoned farmhouses in the Aix countryside, drawn to their blocky, geometric massing as a way of exploring solid form.
