Bird’s-Eye View of Birmingham, Alabama, c. 1885 by Henry Wellge surveys the young “Magic City” from an elevated vantage, its gridded streets, iron furnaces, and rail corridors radiating across Jones Valley only fourteen years after Birmingham’s founding. Wellge, a German-born American panorama artist, was among the most prolific bird’s-eye-view lithographers of his era, producing detailed city views across the United States that combined a surveyor’s accuracy with fine engraved artistry.
