View of the Seacoast near Wargemont in Normandy, painted by Pierre-Auguste Renoir in 1880, captures the wide chalk cliffs, thatched cottages, and luminous English Channel sky near the country house of his patron Paul Berard. Working quickly out-of-doors to capture the shifting coastal light, Renoir rendered the scene in cool blue-greys, soft cream tones, and silvery greens with swift, atmospheric brushwork. Wargemont, situated near Dieppe, became one of his most beloved working retreats during this transitional decade when he was moving toward pure landscape painting.
