View of the Sea, Guernsey, painted by Pierre-Auguste Renoir in 1883, depicts the broad sweep of the English Channel seen from the grassy cliffs above Moulin Huet Bay, with a lone figure in a red dress seated in the foreground and distant sailboats dotting the water. Renoir rendered the scene during a month-long stay on the Channel Island, using soft blue-grey tones for the sea and sky against warm golden tones in the sunlit clifftop grass. The Guernsey seascapes mark a pivotal moment in Renoir's career, as he began moving away from figure painting toward the purer landscape studies that would define his work through the mid-1880s.
