View of L’Estaque Through the Trees, by Paul Cézanne looks past a screen of gnarled tree trunks and dense Mediterranean foliage to the hillside village of L’Estaque near Marseille, its terracotta rooftops and pale stone walls stacked against a hazy blue gulf beyond. Cézanne, a French Post-Impressionist painter (1839-1906) who bridged Impressionism and Cubism, returned repeatedly to this coastal village in the late 1870s, using its sharp Provençal light and scaffolding of branches to test a new, more structural approach to landscape.
