Painted in 1884 during Renoir's celebrated joint Riviera expedition with Monet, View from Cap Martin of Monte Carlo looks out from the pine-shaded promontory of Cap Martin across the glittering Mediterranean toward the white houses of Monte Carlo rising on the opposite headland. The composition unfolds in cool sea blues, soft cream, and warm coral tones, animated by the swift, broken brushwork the two friends honed while sharing motifs along the dramatic Ligurian coast. Their winter 1883–84 trip from Marseille through Genoa was Renoir's most ambitious landscape campaign of the decade. The work stands as a luminous testament to one of Impressionism's most fertile painting expeditions and to Renoir's deepening love of southern light.
