Venice, the Doge's Palace, painted by Pierre-Auguste Renoir in 1881 depicts the sunlit facade of the Palazzo Ducale and its campanile across the shimmering waters of the Venetian lagoon, with gondolas and sailboats animating the foreground. Painted during Renoir's first trip to Italy, the scene was so popular with visiting artists that Renoir joked there were at least six of them queuing up to paint it. The painting marks a turning point in his career, sitting between his Impressionist beginnings and the more classically inspired period that followed.
