Painted in Renoir's final years between 1917 and 1919 at his Les Collettes estate in Cagnes-sur-Mer, Two Figures in a Landscape captures two reclining bathers nestled into a Mediterranean hillside of grass and shimmering foliage. The composition unfolds in warm coral, rose, and verdant green tones, animated by the molten, sculptural brushwork that became the signature of Renoir's late, rheumatic period. Working from a wheeled chair with brushes strapped to his hands, he persisted in painting these monumental bather and landscape fusions until his death in December 1919.
