Tree Roots, painted by Vincent van Gogh in July 1890, presents a tangled close-up view of gnarled tree roots and a chalky embankment on a wooded slope above Auvers-sur-Oise, rendered in surging violet, cobalt, green, and ochre brushwork. Long believed to be the last canvas Van Gogh worked on before his death on 29 July 1890, the painting was identified by the Van Gogh Museum as matching the exact site depicted on the hillside above the village. Its restless, densely woven composition is regarded as one of the most powerful and abstract passages in his entire body of work.
