The Young Ladies of Giverny, Sun Effect (Les Demoiselles de Giverny, effet de soleil), by Claude Monet gathers a row of golden grain-sheaf shelters — known in French farming tradition as “demoiselles,” temporary shocks stacked by harvesters before being built into full haystacks — standing upright across a sunlit field near Giverny. Claude Monet (French, 1840-1926), the founder of French Impressionism, built up these forms with thick, textured strokes of paint, giving the grain shelters an almost sculptural presence against the pale midday sky.
