Vincent van Gogh's The Yellow House (1888) depicts the distinctive mustard-yellow building on the Place Lamartine in Arles that he rented and dreamed of turning into a Studio of the South — a communal artists' retreat. Painted with the bold geometry and saturated colour of his mature Arles style, the picture balances the vibrant yellow of the façade against an intense blue sky in one of the most recognisable streetscapes in Western art. The house was central to van Gogh's life in Arles and to his fateful invitation to Paul Gauguin.
