Painted during his voluntary stay at the hospital following his breakdown in late 1888, the work transforms an institutional interior into a scene of quiet human dignity, rendered with remarkable freshness and chromatic sensitivity. It stands among the most historically poignant interiors of his Post-Impressionist period.
