The Skiff (La Yole), painted by Pierre-Auguste Renoir in 1875, captures two young women rowing a brilliant orange skiff across the cobalt-blue waters of the Seine near Chatou, a white sailboat and rowers drifting beyond, a lakeside villa visible on the far bank. Rendered in vivid complementary strokes of vermilion orange against ultramarine and cobalt blue, the composition captures the rapid, broken brushwork that defined Impressionism at its peak. The scene reflects Renoir's outings with Monet and their circle along the Seine, which turned the river into a laboratory for light and color. Now held at the National Gallery in London, the painting remains one of Renoir's most celebrated river scenes.

Artist: Pierre-Auguste Renoir (French, 1841-1919). Date: 1875.
