The Siesta, painted by Vincent van Gogh in 1890, reimagines an engraving by Jean-François Millet, showing two farm labourers asleep beside a haystack at midday, their forms rendered in van Gogh's saturated complementary blues and golden yellows. Painted while van Gogh was a patient at the Saint-Paul-de-Mausole asylum in Saint-Rémy, the work reflects his enduring admiration for Millet and his empathy for the quiet dignity of rural labour. It stands among the most tender and luminous of his series of paintings after Millet.
