Dated 1883 and known by its French title Coucher de Soleil à Douarnenez, Setting Sun at Douarnenez captures the glowing disc of the sun sinking behind the cliffs of the Breton port of Douarnenez, its light spilling across the bay in molten copper and rose. The composition unfolds in warm orange, rose, and dusky violet tones, animated by the broken, atmospheric brushwork that French painters brought to the dramatic Atlantic coast in the 1880s.
