Setting Sun at Douarnenez, painted by Pierre-Auguste Renoir in 1883, captures a rocky Breton cove at dusk, where the reflection of the sun streaks across calm water between dark outcrops of stone. Painted during a stay on the Brittany coast, the work shows Renoir turning from figure painting to a quieter, atmospheric seascape, rendered in soft golden and violet tones as daylight fades.
