The Seine in Argenteuil, painted by Pierre-Auguste Renoir in 1873, presents a broad, tranquil view across the river toward the rooftops and church spire of the town, with small boats resting near the reeded bank. Painted the same summer Renoir often worked side by side with Claude Monet at this riverside retreat west of Paris, the canvas reflects the pale, silvery light and open sky that drew both painters to the location. Its airy, high-horizon composition is characteristic of the plein-air river scenes that helped define early Impressionist landscape painting.

Artist: Pierre-Auguste Renoir (French, 1841-1919). Date: 1873.

The Seine in Argenteuil (La Seine à Argenteuil), 1873 by Pierre-Auguste Renoir. Impressionist River Wall Art Canvas Print.

A note on this reproduction: this print renders in cooler, more muted tones, with a paler blue-grey sky and softer, more subdued greens along the far bank. A warmer, more golden reproduction of this same painting is also available in our collection.
