The Seine at Argenteuil, painted by Pierre-Auguste Renoir in 1875, looks out through a screen of willow branches and riverside brush toward a small house on the opposite bank, the water beyond glimpsed in fragments of blue and lavender. Rather than a broad panorama, Renoir chose an intimate, semi-enclosed view of the riverbank near Argenteuil, letting the dappled foliage dissolve into loose strokes of green and gold. The composition shows his growing interest in using natural screens of leaves and branches to frame and fracture the light within a landscape.
