The Seine at Chatou, painted by Pierre-Auguste Renoir in 1874, fills nearly the entire canvas with river and sky, a narrow strip of land and a distant railway bridge marking the horizon while a moored sailboat anchors the foreground. Painted during the years Renoir worked alongside Monet along the Seine west of Paris, the canvas is built from quick, nervous brushstrokes that dissolve outlines into shimmering passages of lavender-gray water. It stands among the boldest and best preserved of his river landscapes from the first half of the 1870s.
