The Seine at Argenteuil, painted by Pierre-Auguste Renoir in 1888, looks across the broad river toward the leafy western bank, where a lone sailboat drifts beneath a wide, luminous sky and the spires of the town rise faintly in the distance. The composition unfolds in cool jade greens, dusty lavender, and pale ivory tones, animated by the firmer, more controlled brushwork Renoir developed after returning from his Italian journey in the mid-1880s. By this date Argenteuil had become both a beloved subject and something of a memorial to the founding moment of Impressionism, since the Monet household had departed the town years earlier. The painting is held today in the Barnes Foundation, Philadelphia.
