The Road near Cagnes, painted by Pierre-Auguste Renoir in 1905, follows a shaded lane arching beneath a dense canopy of trees near his beloved Cagnes-sur-Mer estate, where small figures make their way along the sunlit path toward a distant clearing. The composition unfolds in deep greens, dusky violet, and warm dappled light, animated by the loose, velvety brushwork of Renoir's late Provençal manner. Renoir had purchased the Les Collettes estate at Cagnes that same year, drawn by its ancient groves and Riviera light, and the surrounding lanes became a constant subject in his final decade.
