The Road Menders, painted by Vincent van Gogh in December 1889 depicts laborers repaving the Cours de l’Est in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence beneath a row of monumental plane trees ablaze with autumn gold. The dramatic contrast between the warm ochres of the foliage and the deep blue sky, rendered in dense, energetic impasto, makes this one of the most chromatically intense works of his asylum period. Van Gogh painted at least two versions of the scene, returning to the same street on repeated excursions from Saint-Paul-de-Mausole.
