The Roach, c. 1739 by Eleazar Albin depicts a plump roach with an olive-green back, silvery flanks and crimson-red fins, lying over finely ruled lines of water beneath a soft, pale sky, delicately hand-coloured. Eleazar Albin (English, c.1680–1741/42) was one of the earliest English natural history illustrators, best known for his studies of insects, spiders, and songbirds.

Artist: Eleazar Albin (English, c.1680–1741/42). Date: c. 1739 (inscribed “E. Albin Del: 1739”; the plate was published after his death in editions of Roger North’s essay on fish and fish-ponds, including The History of Esculent Fish, 1794).
