The Puzzled Fox, by Currier & Ives depicts a red fox rearing up on its hind legs to peer curiously into a hollow tree stump, watched by two game birds perched on a branch above — one of the firm's celebrated “hidden picture” puzzle prints, in which camouflaged animal faces are concealed within the foliage. Currier & Ives, the renowned 19th-century American lithography firm founded by Nathaniel Currier and James Merritt Ives, published this piece in 1872 as one of its most popular puzzle-picture lithographs.
Artist: Currier & Ives (American, active 1835-1907). Date: 1872.
