The Preaching of John Knox Before the Lords of the Congregation, by David Wilkie depicts the Scottish reformer's fiery sermon delivered in the parish church of St. Andrews on 10 June 1559, addressing an assembly of nobles, bishops, and soldiers gathered beneath the pulpit. David Wilkie (1785–1841), one of Scotland's most celebrated genre and history painters, was renowned for his dramatic narrative compositions and meticulous historical detail, and this engraving reproduces his 1832 painting now held at Tate Britain.
