The Potato Eaters (De Aardappeleters), 1885 by Vincent van Gogh

The Potato Eaters, painted by Vincent van Gogh in 1885, depicts a peasant family gathered around a small table in a dim, lamplit cottage, sharing a modest meal of potatoes, their rough, work-worn hands and weathered faces rendered in a dark, earthy palette of browns and greens. Painted in Nuenen at the close of his Dutch period, it was the young Van Gogh’s first major figure composition and the work he considered the most important of his career to that date, a deliberate tribute to the dignity of rural labour.
