The Poet’s Garden (Le Jardin du Poète), painted by Vincent van Gogh in 1888, depicts the public garden across from the Yellow House in Arles, its lawn, flowering shrubs, and weeping willow rendered beneath a luminous chrome-yellow evening sky, with the pale spire of the Église Saint-Trophime visible in the distance. Van Gogh conceived the painting as decoration for Paul Gauguin’s bedroom, imagining the garden as a place fit for the poets he admired, Dante and Petrarch among them. Painted during the exuberant early weeks of his time in Arles, it stands among the most lyrical and light-filled works of his career.
